The main materials for weaving up carpets or rugs are wool, cotton and silk which are easily available to traditional carpet weavers .The earliest known Persian carpet was discovered by Russian Professor Redneck in 1949 during excavations of burial mounds in the Altia Mountains in Siberia.

Another rug was discovered in the same area, dating back to the fifth century B.C. and is now kept in the Armitage museum of Leningrad. Historical evidences show that long before the first century B.C. the court of Cyrus the great who founded the Persian monarchy over 2500 years ago, was be decked by magnificent carpets. Iranian carpets and rugs are categorized basically according to their design style and material, size, color, pattern, foundation, knots, durability and quality.

The most famous carpets and rugs are woven in the northeast, south, center, the west and north west of the country. Turkmen Sahra, Mashhad and Kashmar in the northeast, Kerman in the south, Isfahan and Kashan in the central part, Bijar in the west and Tabriz in the northwest are the most famous places to weave carpet. Among the most important features and characteristics of Iranian carpets, we can mention the following: Lasting and bright colors, durable materials, beautiful designs, eye catching patterns, clear and vibrant colors, large size, fine and excellent weaving, and high number of knots up to even 5000 knots per.sq cm.
